Term 3, Week 8

Welcome to Week Eight!

I hope all the dads out there had a great day on Sunday. I enjoyed an Eagle Bay Brewery lunch on Saturday with the In laws which was super. Harvested some potatoes and fennel from the garden, jumped in the water up at Bunker Bay and fixed some fencing from jumping kangaroos, so all in all, a pretty productive weekend. It's amazing what you can get down when there isn't any footy to distract you.

LEARNING JOURNEY

Our annual 'Learning Journey' afternoon is soon approaching. Hopefully, you can find the time to visit the classroom next Wednesday 13th September from 3:15pm to 5:00pm. The purpose of the afternoon is for the students to showcase some of their past or current learning. At the conclusion of your tour, you will be given the opportunity to fill out a positive feedback proforma and place it on one of the pieces of work that they presented. See you Wednesday week!

BOOK CLUB

Book Club will begin next week, with all students receiving a new novel to read for the next 5
weeks.

Every Monday morning, each child will receive a weekly schedule via One Note - Literacy Group Folder.

It would be great if you could have a look at the schedule each week and have your child explain to you what they are required to do to be ready for the 'Book Club Meeting' on Friday morning.

As part of their weekly reading log for the next 5 weeks, your child will have to read aloud to a member of the family to have one of the diary logs signed off on (I appreciate your support with this). This would be a great opportunity to have your child give a brief summary (retell the main events) on what has been happening in the story so far.

Below are the different roles that your child will focus on over the next 5 weeks. Please note, that they only focus on 1 role each week - you can find their role for the week in the weekly schedule.

The Summariser will summarise one of the chapters that they read for the week. They will focus on the 'who, what, where, when and why' to help them retell the main events.

The Director will compose four questions to discuss during the Book Club Meeting. These questions will use ideas from the novel but can only be answered using their own personal experiences.

The Word Finder will find a minimum of five interesting or unusual words from the text. They then use these words to complete a dictionary meaning, the sentence that the word was in and another sentence using the word in the same context.

The Illustrator will create an illustration from a scene in the book. There objective is to use as much detail and colour as possible so that their group members can pick the scene without reading the caption.

The Connector will try and make a 'text to text', a 'text to self' and a 'text to world' connection from the required pages for that week. The most important part of making a connection is writing down how that connection helps you create a deeper understand of the novel. This could include a deeper understanding of the setting or the character's feelings.

SUCCESS CRITERIA FOR EACH ROLE CAN BE FOUND ON ONE NOTE AND IN YOUR CHILD'S WORK IN PROGRESS FOLDER.

FINAL'S FEVER INVESTIGATION

The students have been placed into partnerships and are busy researching flights, places to stay, Grand Final tickets etc. It's great seeing the kids displaying their teamwork and leadership skills.

HOME LEARNING CHALLENGE

Your child will be given the opportunity to show off their problem solving skills each night for homework. They will be able to access two daily problems via One Note - Content Library - Mathematics Folder. They must choose which problem they are going to solve and solve it on the back of their multiplication and division facts sheet.

Writing: Poetry - Limerick, Haiku, Kennings, Ode, Acrostic, Diamante, etc.... culminating in each student publishing a bound book of their best poems.
