Term 4, Week 4

Kaya Parents,

I hope you had a fantastic weekend. Go the Matildas!!! I have a new found appreciation for mechanics after spending 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday morning replacing the timing belt and servicing my car. By servicing the car, I mean passing spanners and ratchet spanners, breaker bars etc to my father in law who was doing all the heavy lifting.

BOOK CLUB

The new Novel Study Book Club has begun this week, with all students receiving a new novel to read for the next 5 weeks.

Every Monday morning, each child will receive a weekly schedule via One Note - Literacy Group Folder.

It would be great if you could have a look at the schedule each week and have your child explain to you what they are required to do to be ready for the 'Book Club Meeting' on Friday morning.

As part of their weekly reading log for the next 5 weeks, your child will have to read aloud to a member of the family to have one of the diary logs signed off on (I appreciate your support with this). This would be a great opportunity to have your child give a brief summary (retell the main events) on what has been happening in the story so far.

Below are the different roles that your child will focus on over the next 5 weeks. Please note, that they only focus on 1 role each week - you can find their role for the week in the weekly schedule.

The Summariser will summarise one of the chapters that they read for the week. They will focus on the 'who, what, where, when and why' to help them retell the main events.

The Director will compose four questions to discuss during the Book Club Meeting. These questions will use ideas from the novel but can only be answered using their own personal experiences.

The Word Finder will find a minimum of five interesting or unusual words from the text. They then use these words to complete a dictionary meaning, the sentence that the word was in and another sentence using the word in the same context.

The Illustrator will create an illustration from a scene in the book. There objective is to use as much detail and colour as possible so that their group members can pick the scene without reading the caption.

The Connector will try and make a 'text to text', a 'text to self' and a 'text to world' connection from the required pages for that week. The most important part of making a connection is writing down how that connection helps you create a deeper understand of the novel. This could include a deeper understanding of the setting or the character's feelings.

Thanks to our wonderful P&F we have a Visual Arts Specialist visiting OLC next week to facilitate art lessons for the Year 4 – 6 classes.

CRICKET EXCURSION

On Thursday 9th November, the year 5 and 6 students will be participating in the SWPSA Interschool cricket Carnival at Bovell Oval in Busselton, scheduled from 9.30am to 2pm. Teams will be of mixed ability levels, to encourage fun, friendship and participation. Permission slips will go out this week. Some points to note:

  • students depart school in the bus at 8.40am
  • students will return to OLC by bus at 2.50pm (you may need to make alternate arrangements for your child to get home if they usually get the school bus).
  • You may pick your child up from Bovell Oval at the end of the day
  • Please provide food and drink for the whole day (no canteen facilities available)
  • Full OLC sport uniform and hat (teal polo shirt)
  • you are welcome to come along to support your child for the day

A note from Mrs Coltrinari

HASS: Migration

The students' task is to interview a first generation migrant member of their family or community to explore the push / pull reasons why people migrate, through the eyes of the migrant. As a class we will identify and discuss ways to support migrants in their assimilation.

Students are required to submit their interview transcript with notes, and a newspaper article created on Canva profiling the experience of their interviewee.
Exemplars and resources are on OneNote, Content Library, HASS - as well as a video of a 'modelled' interview with my dad, Malik Mascarenhas a migrant from Sri Lanka.

Please support your child with:

 1. Identifying a first generation migrant - most are interviewing parents or grandparents, but a few students are unclear if certain people in their family circle are migrants or not. You may know a migrant in your workplace, or a friend who wouldn't mind being interviewed. Alternatively, your child can interview Father Archie or Mrs Meyer's mother-in-law, who will be guests in our class in the coming week, to share their migrant stories.

The migrant does not have to be someone who has fled a war, or is a refugee, but it could be someone who has decided to migrate to Australia by choice, for marriage or work opportunities.

2. Recording the interview on your phone / ipad. Most children do not know shorthand, and can't write as quickly as the interviewee speaks.

3. I have provided a bank of interview questions to the children as a scaffold, but please prompt them in creating some of their own questions too, as the interview progresses.

Thank you.

Grandparents Day

We will celebrate Grandparents Day on Friday, the 3rd of November (Week 4), so please make sure that your child has taken the time to invite their grandparents along if possible.
We will start at 9.00am with a 1K assembly.
Grandparents can then go into classrooms for activities from 9.30-10.40am and to look at their grandchild's work.
At 10:40am, they will have an opportunity to share morning tea with their grandchildren in the undercover area.

Calendar Art

I've had feedback that there is an error with the link to order art. Admin are working on resolving this, please contact Mrs Marrell or Mrs Reilly in the office if you are still having issues.
