Master Chef Challenge
Dear Parents,
As part of providing a real-world, authentic application of
our Chemical Science learning I have launched a Junior Master Chef challenge for
the children.
We have been learning about states of matter – solids,
liquids, gases and colloids – their properties, as well as how they can change
state when heat or cold is applied.
The children are required to make chocolate covered strawberries,
to be taste tested by our Master Chef Judge Mr Lee (without the knowledge of his
wife who keeps him on a strict diet of broccoli and Brussels sprouts!)
The children have been given step by step instructions which
they can refer to at any time on One Note…. But here it is in a nutshell.
Key Points:
- children
work in groups of 3 or 4
- create a 2-minute cooking segment, (recorded at school in the kitchenette or canteen), of melting the chocolate and preparing the strawberries
- a
script is usually a good idea
- the
children are required to demonstrate their science understanding by
incorporating the words “solid, liquid, melt, heat, cool, change of state, etc”
- costumes
such as chef hats, wigs, etc are encouraged
- the
year 6 students will assist with video editing
- each
child has a budget of $5 maximum, which I kindly request you assist with
- each
child is required to submit a recipe card with ingredients and method
- the
children will require some time out of school hours to have fun at home,
playing with quantities, presentation ideas, methods to melt chocolate, etc
- please
note our nut-free policy applies
- to
be completed through weeks 6 and 7 of this term
Warmly,
Anne
