Harmony in week 8

Dear Parents,

Namaste kohomada (I bow to you, how are you)

21 March 2022 - Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians. Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country - from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony week, signifying social communication and meaningful conversation. The children can choose to wear something orange on Monday to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. (Please don't rush out and buy anything, something simple like an orange scrunchie, scarf, sweatband, t-shirt, socks... and only if your child wishes, it is not compulsory.)

I will be proud to share my native Sri Lankan culture with the children. I will dress in traditional sari, and share Sri Lanka's history, food, language, religion, dance and song with our class. Culture is central to a child's individuality, identity and sense of belonging. If your child would like to share something from your own cultural background such as music, flag, literature, photographs please send it in with them on Monday... it would make my heart sing!

These are important dates for us to acknowledge as we work towards harmony and inter-cultural understanding as a nation.

Master Chef

What a rich learning experience this was for the children, providing them with a real world application of not only their chemical science understanding, but bringing in financial mathematics, procedure writing, collaborative skills, problem solving abilities, higher order reflective skills, technology and design...... and a heap of fun. Ok, admittedly there were some shenanigans ... Elvis, a chipmunk, unicorn and ballerina turned up to cook, some tried to bribe the judge with Essendon themed strawberries, the dastardly chocolate just refused to melt.... and Mr Lee now has a sensitive stomach, but hey, you can't win them all, right?!

The children were fully engaged and beaming throughout this project, and I couldn't be more proud of them all. They are now in the process of editing their Master Chef videos under the expert eye of Mrs Blythman, and will present their videos to the class over the coming days.

Parent Meetings - some clarity if required

As per the newsletter, we are taking a 'down-sized' approach to parent meetings this year due to Covid19 protocols. I will only contact parents for an essential interview, if there are special needs or supports required to enhance your child's progress.
As always, please email me if you have any concerns.

And the award goes to ......

Term 1 Week 7 Jax Blackburn

For developing a strong work ethic and positive attitude in all learning tasks. You work autonomously, ask questions when you need clarification and see tasks through to completion. Your specialist teachers are also commenting on your impressive dedication and effort in their lessons, making you a pleasure to teach. Well done Jax, keep shining!

World Down Syndrome Day

The socks are painted and ready to be worn in support of World Down Syndrome Day on Monday. Please send in a gold coin with your child to be donated to this worthy cause.

Character strength for the week

Currently at OLC we are focusing on modelling and observing different character strengths. This week we are looking for people who show honesty
"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free". John 8:32

Ziggy Marley

There's more to children and animal interactions than meets the eye. The children were overjoyed to have my puppy Ziggy spend the day with us on Friday. They read to her, gave her lots of cuddles, and ran wild with her on the oval. The Reggio Emilia approach to education believes that animals are the 'fourth teacher' - a conduit to learning, by improving social interaction, reducing anxiety and increasing motivation and learning. We powered through our literacy block and a double math lesson with smiles all round.... Ziggy may need to visit the classroom more often!
This week Lily-Eve is bringing in her two adopted baby goats, I'm not kidding (pardon the pun) .... we cannot wait!

Have a wonderful week!
Warmly,
Anne
