IN THE CLASSROOM

Science:

We will be continuing our Earth and Space science unit for the next couple of weeks before moving into our Physical Sciences unit where we investigate how light from a source forms shadows and can
be absorbed, reflected and refracted. This Thursday is looking like a great day to test out the solar ovens that the students constructed last term. We will let you know about the results in the coming weeks.

HASS:

We will also be completing our 'Life and Land' unit on the Australian colonies over the next few weeks. The students will be learning about what life was like for different groups of people in the colonies, including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. They will examine settlement patterns, the environmental impact of colonisation and the daily lives of the early settlers.

English:

The students will be receiving a new novel to read as part of their Book Club. Both Year Five classes will be spending the first two weeks of the term to reteach the 5 different roles associated with the Book Club.

The Summariser will summarise one of the chapters that they read for the week. They will focus on the 'who, what, where, when and why' to help them retell the main events.

The Director will compose four questions to discuss during the Book Club Meeting. These questions will use ideas from the novel but can only be answered using their own personal experiences.

The Word Finder will find a minimum of five interesting or unusual words from the text. They then use these words to complete a dictionary meaning, the sentence that the word was in and another sentence using the word in the same context.

The Illustrator will create an illustration from a scene in the book. There objective is to use as much detail and colour as possible so that their group members can pick the scene without reading the caption.

The Connector will try and make a 'text to text', a 'text to self' and a 'text to world' connection from the required pages for that week. The most important part of making a connection is writing down how that connection helps you create a deeper understand of the novel. This could include a deeper understanding of the setting or the character's feelings.

We will be focusing on poetry for writing this term. The students will explore the different elements of
poetry including structure, rhythm, rhyme, sound devices and figurative language before constructing a series of different poems including a limerick, haiku, cinquain, an ode and a ballad just to name a few.

Numeracy:

The first three weeks will see the Year Fives classes completing a treasure hunt investigation. The students will learn about compass points, directions - turns and degrees, and coordinates before applying their knowlegde in the treasure hunt.

The second investigation will involve the students creating a game for side show alley. The students will be exploring statistics and probability, and rules and patterns to complete the game.

Enjoy the rest of the week!

Until next time,

Mr Jones
