Term 2, Week 5

  Kaya Team 5J,

What an amazing run of weather we are having at the moment. Hopefully, you have been making the most of it. Thank you to everyone that came down to support the OLC soccer teams on Friday night. What a great turn out! I can say that I was very sore over the weekend, but I managed to leave the walking frame at home for the new week...

CHARACTER STRENGTHS

This week we are looking at developing the character strength of Leadership.
St Joan of Arc is said to have heard the voices of angels and saints. She heard their messages and helped the king of France to win many battles and eventually his war through her leadership and insight.
• Do you help groups to get things done?
• Do you help others achieve goals?

YEAR 5/6 LEADERSHIP DAY

Our Year 5 and 6 students were in the hall today for our Leadership Day with Lorin Nicholson. They were treated to some great guitar playing, inspiring messages and some challenging activities.

CLASS AUCTION

Our second class auction for the year is almost upon us. This is where the children get to spend the money that they have earned and saved since our last auction.
Rather than the students receiving prizes that end up in landfill, they have the opportunity to bid on items such as, 30 minutes on MindCraft for 4 friends, OOdie or Free Dress Day, 30 minutes on the basketball court for 4 friends, Shoes and Socks for a week and the big ticket item of No Homework for a fortnight, just to name a few. (Please note, that there is only 1 of each item)

The first auction was a success and it is a great way to keep the kids intrinsically motivated throughout the term.

HOME LEARNING / DIARIES

Just a quick little refresher on how the home learning in Year 5 works.

Every Monday, the students are given time to set up their diaries for the week. This is when they will nominate particular days to complete their Times Tables activities and concept review (activity to review a concept from the previous week).
As we all live very busy lives, the children are given the weekend to catch up on something that may not have been completed during the week. What and how much they reading each night is also recorded in the diary.

On a Monday afternoon, home learning activities and diaries are sighted by myself, and students are awarded a payment of $50. Fines of $100 are issued if activities are not completed, diary has not been interacted with or if the diary is not signed by a parent.

Spare home learning activities live on the whiteboard at the front of the class. If a student is absent for the Monday, it is up to them to catch up on all normal Monday procedures (e.g - setting up diary, getting activity sheet etc).

It might be an idea that on a Monday afternoon, you sit down with your child for a couple of minutes to discuss how they have organised their home learning for that week.

If any clarification is required, please don't hesitate to contact me via email or pop into the classroom for a quick chat.
