Term 3, Week 10

Kaya Team 5J,

Welcome to the Sunday Edition of the Class Blog. Unfortunately, I won't be at school tomorrow because I will be attending a funeral, so today is the day!

I hope you are all having an excellent weekend and are ready to dive in to the last week of Term Three. I spent some time in the garden yesterday, preparing beds for my spring / summer seedlings but also digging up potatoes. If you have never grown potatoes before, I highly recommend it. Digging up and finding them, truly is one of life's simple pleasures. Fun for the whole family!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

1. Book Week Dress Up and Activity Day - Friday

  • 1N Performance Assembly - 9:15am
  • Costume Parade -                  9:25am
  • Star Citizen Awards -            10:00am

2. Mission Markets Reward (Year 5) - Friday

CHARACTER STRENGTH FOCUS:

St Martin de Porres faced a lot of discrimination and injustice as a person of colour. He was not even initially allowed into any religious orders because of this. He was patient and kind and lived his life to help others. He saw no task as too small or beneath him and treated others with kindness and respect regardless of how they may have treated him.

BOOK WEEK:

This year's theme is Read, Grow, Inspire. Children are encouraged to dress up on the day but it is not compulsory. Please encourage your child to dress to theme or as a book character. Students who don't want to participate are required to wear their normal Friday uniform.

MISSION MARKETS REWARD:

The Year Five cohort collected the most 'OLC Dollars' at the Mission Markets earlier in the term. As a result, they won themselves a reward.

The students came up with a number of ideas for the reward (some realistic and some, not so realistic) and we have decided that the two classes will finish the term with an 'Oodie or PJs, Movie and Popcorn' afternoon. Unfortunately, the logistics around a trip to Adventure World was too difficult for a Friday afternoon!

The two classes will watch 'Holes' (rated PG) in the hall on Friday afternoon. We will supply the students with some popcorn, however, the students are allowed to bring in a small zip lock bag of snacks or lollies to enjoy. No Flavoured drinks please, H2O in water bottles will suffice.

Due to the 'Book Week Parade' being in the morning, the students will be able to change in to their pajamas or throw on a oodie at morning tea time. The children can stay in their costumes if they wish.

For comfort in the hall, a picnic blanket, towel and/or a pillow can be brought into school.

IN THE CLASSROOM:

Art - The students have been busy learning, practising and fine tuning their portrait techniques, which means the Junior Archie OLC 2023 has officially been launched. The criteria for the Junior Archie is as follows:

If possible, students should ask their subjects for permission before planning their portraits. Hopefully, your child will be able to use some of the holidays to brainstorm and research ideas, plan and set out their portaits / self-portraits, so that they are ready to begin their final pieces in the first week of Term Four. We are very lucky to be using mounting board (donated from Blue Wren) for our artworks.

Stay tuned for our official 'Junior Archie OLC' Exhibition.

English - We will busy making the final touches and printing our 'Poetry Booklets' this week, as well as preparing for next term's writing genre by completing an explanation 'Cold Task' on the Water Cycle.

We will also continue with the second week of our Novel Study Book Clubs. Unfortunately, we didn't have our first Book Club meeting on Friday (sports carnival), but good news, it has been rescheduled for tomorrow morning. You can keep track of the weekly novel study schedule by visiting your child's personal 'Literacy Groups' folder in One Note.

Congratulations to Saskia Louw for receiving a Merit Award recently. Keep up the great work Saskia!

Hope you have a wonderful break over the holidays!

Drive safe, travel safe, stay safe...

Until next time,

Mr Jones
