Term 3, Week 10

Kaya Team 5J, Welcome to the Sunday Edition of the Class Blog. Unfortunately, I won't be at school tomorrow because I will be attending a funeral, so today is the day! I hope you are all having an excellent weekend and are ready to dive in to the last week of Term Three. I spent some time in the garden yesterday, preparing beds for my spring / summer seedlings but also digging up potatoes. If you have never grown potatoes before, I highly recommend it. Digging up and finding them, truly is one of life's simple pleasures. Fun for the whole family!  QUOTE OF THE WEEK: IMPORTANT REMINDERS: 1. Term 3, Week 8

Welcome to Week Eight! I hope all the dads out there had a great day on Sunday. I enjoyed an Eagle Bay Brewery lunch on Saturday with the In laws which was super. Harvested some potatoes and fennel from the garden, jumped in the water up at Bunker Bay and fixed some fencing from jumping kangaroos, so all in all, a pretty productive weekend. It's amazing what you can get down when there isn't any footy to distract you.  Hello all and welcome to Culture, Nature, Challenge week!  The students and I are super excited for Thursday and Friday. It looks like we should be greeted with great weather. Maybe a little sprinkle of rain here and there? But all in all, it should be a great couple of days. QUOTE OF THE WEEK INSIDE THE CLASSROOM Reading:  Beginning in Week 8 and running for 5 weeks, the Year Five classes will be participating in a Book Club. Each student will be placed into a reading group and will be assigned a particular novel to read. Each week, the members of the group will have to perform a different role and contribute to a Book Club meeting every Friday. Over the five weeks and on a rotation system, each student will have been responsible for being the director, illustrator, word finder, summariser and connector.  Over the next 2 weeks of this term, we will continue to model how to perform each role explicitly, so that they will ready for the Book Club. Culture, Nature and ...

Mission Markets

Image
Hey everybody! Just a quick post in regards to the Feast of the Assumption of Mary Mission Markets for 2023 held  this Friday 04 August. This year the Year Five classes will be running a 'Hair Spray and Finger Nails' Market Stall to help raise money on the day.  We are asking that all of the boys bring in a can of coloured hair spray and all girls bring in a bottle of nail polish. If you have any bottles of hair spray / nail polish  that you no longer use and would like to send them in, that is fine. If you need to purchase coloured hairspray, I believe that the newsagent and Coles have some in stock. There is also an option for the girls to purchase some finger nail stickers from Kmart as an alternative to nail polish. Please send this in by Thursday afternoon. There will also be a Basketball Madness stall, but we have all the resources at school for this. On Friday please send in some coins (if possible), in a ziploc bag with your child's name, so that they can p...

Operation Christmas Child / Home Learning

Image
Hi team, Just a quick blog post regarding 'Operation Christmas Child' and 'Home Learning'. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD You would have received a handout last week explaining the following: All the children in Year Five will soon  participate in  'Operation Christmas Child' which is an initiative with the goal of packing shoeboxes full of little surprises to give to a child who may have never received a gift before. By participating in this, our children will have a first hand experience aimed at building the school value of compassion.  Your child will be grouped with four other children to contribute and pack the shoe box. The cost to send a shoe box will be  $2.50 per child .  We are asking you to encourage your child to do something extra at home to earn the money that is needed to buy the item to put into the provided shoe box. Please see below an example of the provided shoe box for Operation Christmas child: It is very exciting for the children to shar...

Term 3, Week 1

Welcome back team! Whether overseas, up north or in the South West, I hope everyone had a fantastic break with loved ones. I managed to jump on a plane for the first time in six years and headed over east. Spent a couple of days in Sydney before driving the coast to Brisbane. Favourite spot would have to be Yamba in Northern NSW (great spot for a sunrise - picture below) and a highlight of the trip, funnily enough was the Art Gallery of New South Wales (seeing both the finalists of the Archibald and Junior Archie). I feel I am quite the art critic now and inspired to bring some of the Gallery into the classroom to both respond to and appreciate, but to also inspire the students to create their own self portrait or portrait of someone special to them.
